PRA RIVER

The Pra river and its tributaries the Ofin and the Birim form the largest river system draining the Akan dissected peneplain. This river enters the sea a few kilometers east of Shama. The river flows in long stretches of gentle slope in the upper section and as rapids in the lower reaches. The notable rapids are located downstream of Ofin's confluence between Enyinabirim and a few kilometers upstream of Daboasi. In the initial reaches close to the source, the river has a very steep slope.
The original planning conceived by other consultants involved four dams causing extensive submergence of the valley in the lower reach. No potential was suggested for upper reaches.

PROFILE OF PRA WITH SECSD PLANNING

The planning by SECSD proposed development of the entire basin. In the upper reaches a series of four small developments of about 5000kW each were designed.

In the lower reaches a series of four developments with vastly reduced submergence and simplified layouts was proposed. The proposal gives the same amount of power and energy as the old alternative.
