SECSD performed the  task of Identification, Planning, Design and preparation of pre investment reports for a series of hydropower plants in four regions of United Republic of Tanzania for The World Bank. On Muhuwesi river in Ruvuma region three  plants were identified and pre-investment reports prepared.

The project area is located in the southern part of Tanzania in a remote area of the Tunduru district. It was initially proposed in 1982 by SWECo to supply Tunduru town with electricity obtained by developing Sunda falls which is located on Ruvuma river at a distance of 65km from Tunduru. Ruvuma forms the border between Tanzania and Mozambique and is fed by a number of large tributaries which flow from Tanzania as well as Mozambique with total catchment of 166,000 sqkm.

This proposal could not be implemented due to civil war in Mozambique and Tunduru was instead supplied by diesel generators. Other potential problems associated with this scheme include issue of water rights, sharing of costs between Tanzania and Mozambique, very difficult access and transmission route from Tunduru, inaccurate hydrology, very large flood magnitude, excessive civil works quantities, voltage drops in transmission. SECSD concluded that the scheme is suitable for development at a later stage with larger capacity.

 

 SUNDA FALLS DEVELOPMENT

  It was decided to go for an alternative and after a careful study of the rivers flowing near Tunduru, it was found that Muhuwesi river which is a tributary of Ruvuma and is wholly in Tanzania is suitable. Some advantages are that the site is easily accessible with easy transmission route.  Further two more sites downstream will provide additional power as demand grows.

Extensive visits of the project area was carried out including aerial reconnaissance of the Muhuwesi and Ruvuma rivers. Extensive precipitation data in the catchment was correlated with runoff with adjacent basins to derive and fix hydrology.

 A simple power house with vertical shaft Kaplan units was designed with two units. All the three schemes are standardized in design. The picture on the left shows the diversion site.

The projects which have been planned on Muhuwesi river are indicated in the table. As a result of the studies it was possible to reduce the cost of installed capacity from $5900 per kW for Sunda to $2200 per kW for the site on Muhuwesi.
