SECSD performed the  task of Identification, Planning, Design and preparation of pre investment reports for a series of hydropower plants in four regions of United Republic of Tanzania for The World Bank. On Malagarasi river in Kigoma region five  plants were identified and pre-investment reports prepared.

The project area is located in the Malagarasi river basin which drains the heartland of Tanzania into the famous rift valley lake called Tanganyika. The total drainage area is about 122,000 km2. A unique feature of this basin is the presence of huge swamps along the river course which give regulated flow in the terminal reach. 

LONGITUDINAL SECTION OF MALAGARASI WITH PLANNING

A feasibility study was conducted in 1982 by Norconsult on the Igamba falls which are located on the Malagarasi and a project configuration with a 4km long tunnel was proposed with an installed capacity of 2 x 3.8MW. The project was not be implemented due to high cost, financial constraints and uncertainties in the geological conditions of the tunnel alignment.

To simplify layout and engineering, SECSD’s have split the development of the same stretch into three stages with installed capacity of 28MW. The need for tunnels is eliminated  and instead by using a short open canal of about 500m the second stage only can meet the load demand and is equivalent to the original scheme

With the result, the implementation cost was reduced to one-third and the project could be executed by local contractors. The pre feasibility report has been completed and at present feasibility study is under progress.  

The design and capacity of the schemes in the stages is standardized so as to simplify and reduce engineering costs.

STAGE 2 POWER HOUSE

When completed the project will displace costly diesel generation for Kigoma, Ujiji, Kasulu, Kibondo and Uvinza towns and can meet the growth in demand for the next couple of decades. A local power grid was also planned and designed as well as load demand and growth studies to check adequacy of installed capacity of the cascade.

The projects which have been planned to be taken up in stages are indicated in the adjoining table. The studies showed that compared to an original implementation cost of in 1982 of about USD 40 million for 8MW, the present cost due to simplified works for stage 2 would be only USD 11 million. This translates to reduction to about 25% due to careful planning.
