PRA RIVER CASCADE DUE DILIGENCE STUDY

Country: Ghana State: Western Region Capacity: 110 MW
Year: Client: CMS Generation Company, Michigan Energy:  616 GWh

The assignment was handled by SECSD as a result of CMS Generation obtaining a concession to develop Pra river as per planning suggested by SECSD for the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Ghana.

CMS Generation commissioned SECSD to conduct due diligence studies and prepare  Feasibility studies as per the overall planning enunciated  for the Western Rivers Pra, Tano and Ankobra.

PROFILE OF LOWER PRA WITH PREFERRED  CASCADE CONFIGURATION

SECSD prepared designs, drawings and  Feasibility Studies for seven power stations on the lower reach of the Pra river with total installed capacity of 110MW.

This involved the formulation, reconnaissance and evaluation of a total of seven different cascade configurations with all possible combinations of plants ranging from dam based type  to diversion development from which the optimal configuration was selected.

Surveys, geological investigations and other requisite studies were undertaken.

Further refinements were carried out to standardize the design of the power stations in the selected cascade development

The seven projects for which SECSD has completed feasibility study are given in the table.

This planning and design has resulted in Implementation cost reduction from about $4000 per kW as per the old previous proposals to about $1500 per kW proving that the projects could be executed on BOOT basis.

The cascade is also suitable for operation in coordination with other thermal or hydro power stations in the grid.
