Pre Investment Study on Mini Hydro at Irrigation Canals and Dams

Country: India State: Kerala Capacity: 29MW
Click to Go back to Main Page Client: Joint UNDP/ESMAP Energy: 114 GWh

Compared to the other three states in the south of India, irrigation dam and canal systems in Kerala are not as extensive. The main prospects for irrigation based mini-hydro development are associated with the numerous diversion weirs and barrages that have been installed for irrigation and water supply purposes. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has completed feasibility studies on the most promising prospects, including those associated with the Peechi Irrigation Dam, the Maniyar Barrage of the Pamba Irrigation project, the tailrace of the Kuttiyadi Dam which discharges water into the Peuvannunmuzhy Irrigation Reservoir, and the Mangalam dam.

SECSD reviewed proposals on the above schemes which would yield about 115 GWh annually. Modifications in the planning were suggested to make the schemes cost effective such as for example the Kutiyadi scheme
