The planning for Renewable Energy was done by an extensive review of all data available on Solar radiation, temperature, stream flow, wind speed, waste products.

From this a series of locations suitable for harnessing these types of energy were identified and separate reports on each category was prepared. 

In most cases an area identified for development would be selected to have all forms of renewable energy  so as to achieve complementation and economy. Many of the equipments selected are such they are also suitable for fabrication using local materials so that it would be useful in promoting local entrepreneurship.

As part of the Renewable Energy planning for Ghana, solar radiation data for the entire country was studied. Solar applications were planned for the entire country. These ranged from use of solar energy for lighting in villages which cannot be electrified by small and mini hydro's to other simple uses such as solar stills for purification of water for drinking water to use of reciprocating pumps for raising the subsoil water for livestock and for small scale irrigation especially in the northern and upper regions of the country. Over 200 locations which could immediately use these applications were identified.

Biogas studies involved the application of Vegetable waste systems and municipal waste systems. A total of over 100 locations were identified especially in the north where there is significant cattle population. The applications involved use of the gas for cooking as well as lighting purposes. By products like manure could be used for farming.

TIMBER DAM WOODEN WHEEL PACKAGED PLANT

The mini hydropower component of the study involved identification of sites across the country suitable for self help projects. The sites are such that initially minimal expenditure using timber dams and wooden wheels could be set up for producing a few kilowatts of power. Later the dams could be strengthned using concrete and a package turbine generator unit.

The wind energy component involved identification of sites suitable for use by simple wind energy equipment like sail mills, paddle mills for raising subsoil water for cattle. The study also involved application of small mills to generate power at 12 or 24V DC and using for direct current lighting.
